Course of Recycling furniture - April (Part 2) · Curso de Reciclaje de muebles - Abril (Parte 2)

Today has been the last day of the course of recycling furniture. I'll talk about it in an upcoming post I will write next week because first I want to show you the works my classmates did in the course of recycling furniture and what we did together in April. As I did last month, I will name them by the initial of their names.

I'll start with A's chair. He hasn't a good health and he only attended a couple times in April, so he and our teacher finished the chair that A began in March.

The images are made with the technique of transfer and with wax crayons he made an interesting antique effect to the back and seat of the chair.

J chose another stool with plastic seat that we had in the workshop and he made a freehand drawing. It looks very well with the other two stools he recycled in March themed in certain cola soda and has made a funny set. I have to take photos of the three stools together.

The technique used was the same as for the other two stools. Synthetic paint for legs and seat and outlined with black permanent marker. Red background is painted with synthetic paint.

JM was motivated to recycle another chair and he used the same techniques que used in the chair he recycled in March. This time the text is written by himself.

The chair is unfinished. He still had to clean one of the transfers and put the final touches that you'll see next month.

The labor contract of M was over, so she returned to the course and was able to finish her chair, which started in March. She removed the transfers on the front legs of the chair and put others she liked more. The text written on the seat of the chair is made by me.

The text is somewhat run because M makes a very depth brushwork, so varnish took up some ink of the permanent marker I used to write. Still, M is very happy with her chair and have to admit that it's lovely.

H also finished his stool. It looks very interesting with all that antique effect and images he used for the transfers.

As for group work, I'll start with the chest drawer that was half-finished in March.

As you can see, we put transfers on several drawers and wrote a text. The text on the countertop is written by J, JM wrote on the first large drawer and I wrote on the last one.

We had a table that was in a pretty bad shape and we used it to put our chairs and stools on while we painted them, until our teacher came up with the idea of recycling it and make a new countertop with wooden boards that we glued with white glue. For the frame, we used woods that we found on the street and cut them to measure and screwed to the table.

In the next photo you can see that we painted the wooden boards in white and two in red. There are two other woods that were painted in gray-blue and covered them with white paint to sand afterwards and making an antique effect in which the colour below can be seen slightly.

We also put transfers with wrapping paper and photocopies. Then we sand it to get the characteristic antique effect.

If you look properly, you can see the red and gray colours that were used in some woods.

The work I did in the table was to chose the colours and transfers distribution on wood (the images were chosen between all of us), painting the woods in red, gray and some white, sanding with a power sander and cut and screwing two of the slats of the frame.

And finally, we also recycle a nightstand. It is in very poor condition because of moisture and woodworm. Although termites were killed, last Tuesday we saw it reappeared.

One of my classmates completely sanded the nightstand with a power sander and H painted the inside of the furniture.

My part was to paint the outside of the piece of furniture. The teacher decided to paint it in two colors to go faster because she wanted to teach us the technique of gradient in furniture, so half of it is completely painted in silver.

For the gradient, we choose orange and yellow, starting with the lighter color on top and ending with orange underneath. Although you can see the gradient, it was not yet finished, so I will show photos in an upcoming entry.

And finally, the teacher wanted to recycle some industrial boxes that were in a terrible condition. They came from a factory of brushes, so they had many gobs of paint and brush bristles glued. Some classmates tried to clean them, but it was very difficult to remove glue blobs and decided to recycle those remaining cleaner. In the next picture you can see how it looked one of them.

During this month of May I've been working on one of these boxes, so I will show photos in an upcoming entry.

To conclude, on 8th June a weeklong exhibition on the furniture we have recycled over the past three months will open and thus will end the course. I'll tell you how was the inauguration and will take photos so that you see.

I hope this entry has been to your liking.

See you soon!

Thanks for your visit!  ¡Gracias por vuestra visita!

    1. Gracias.
