I have been photographing toys for almost 11 years, 4 since I started with figures and I'm only an amateour photographer in general. I haven't attended any face-to-face course and all I have learned has been through the free (and without practice) "online courses" that were offered when buying my DSLR camera, watching many tutorials and above all, practicing a lot. I want to make all of this clear because I don't want there to be any confusion.

Many people fall into the error that if the camera is good, the photos will also be and it's not. I also fell into that mistake when I started taking photography more seriously when my first BJD arrived in 2009. Different cameras have passed through my hands and from experience I can tell you that with a simple camera you can take great photos if you know how to use it. The only difference you will find between a cheap camera and an expensive one will be in terms of noise and other details that a non-expert eye will not notice.

Two years ago I wrote a post in which I took the same photo taken with different cameras. When I re-read the entry, I realized that I didn't give enough details due to lack of knowledge in photography and I could have done it better, so as it's wise to rectify, I have taken another photo with different cameras. This time I will give many more details.

I will first introduce the cameras that I have used along with their most important features.

Llevo casi 11 años fotografiando juguetes, empecé con las figuras hace 4 y solo soy una aficionada a la fotografía en general. No he asistido a ningún curso presencial y todo lo que he he aprendido ha sido a través de los "cursos online" gratuitos (y sin prácticas) que se ofrecían al comprar mi cámara réflex, mirar muchos tutoriales y sobre todo, practicar mucho. Quiero dejar claro todo esto porque no quiero que hayan confusiones.

Mucha gente cae en el error de que si la cámara es buena, las fotos también lo serán y no es así. Yo también caí en es ese error cuando empecé a tomarme más en serio la fotografía cuando llegó mi primera BJD en 2009. Por mis manos han pasado distintas cámaras y por experiencia os puedo decir que con una cámara sencilla se pueden hacer grandes fotos si sabes cómo utilizarla. La única diferencia que encontraréis entre una cámara barata y otra cara será a nivel de ruido y otros detalles que un ojo no experto no va a notar.

Hace dos años escribí una entrada en la que hice la misma foto hecha con distintas cámaras de fotos. Cuando volví a leer la entrada, me di cuenta que no di los suficientes detalles por falta de conocimiento en fotografía y podría haberlo hecho mejor, así que como rectificar es de sabios, he vuelto a hacer otra foto con distintas cámaras. En esta ocasión voy a dar muchos más detalles.

Primero haré una introducción de las cámaras que he utilizado junto con sus características más importantes.

The WIKO Rainbow Lite smartphone is low-range, I bought it in mid-2015 and it lasted 4 years. Although I bought another phone because it broke down for making calls, the camera works perfectly.

El teléfono móvil WIKO Rainbow Lite es de gama baja, lo compré a mediados de 2015 y me duró 4 años. Aunque me compré otro teléfono porque este se estropeó para realizar llamadas, la cámara funciona perfectamente.

The Redmi Note 7 smartphone is mid-range and I bought it in September 2019 out of necessity.

El teléfono móvil Redmi Note 7 es de gama media y lo compré en septiembre de 2019 por necesidad.

With the Olympus X-790 I began to photograph BJDs in 2009 and from there, I started to get interested in photography as an amateur. I bought it in 2007 and it still works, although I don't use it much now.

Con la Olympus X-790 empecé a fotografiar BJDs y a partir de ahí, empezar a interesarme en la fotografía a modo aficionado. La compré en 2007 y aún funciona, aunque no la uso mucho actualmente.

As the previous camera "became small" and I wanted to suply the limitations it has but without going ahead with a DSLR, I purchased the FUJIFILM FinePix S2980 in June 2013 and used until mid-December 2017. The camera is still working well and takes nice pictures, so I still use it when I don't want to carry the DSLR one.

Como la anterior cámara se me quedó "pequeña" y quería suplir las limitaciones que tenía pero sin dar el paso a una cámara réflex, me decidí por la FUJIFILM FinePix S2980. La compré en Junio de 2013 y la usé hasta mediados de Diciembre 2017. La cámara sigue funcionando bien y saca unas fotos bonitas, así que sigo usándola cuando no quiero cargar con la réflex.

I wanted to have full control of the camera and saw that it was time to move on to an DSLR camera. The NIKON D3400 is a DSLR camera designed for beginner photographers and it was my Christmas gift in 2017. I currently use this camera for photo shoots, both figures and dolls, as well as other kinds of photography that I don't publish in this blog. When I acquired it I still didn't know how to use it correctly in manual mode, now I hardly use automatic mode.

It came with the kit lens, a Nikkor AF-S DX 18-55mm. At the beginning of this year I bought another lens, a Tamron 16-300mm to be able to take another type of photography that I can't do with the 18-55mm because depending on the lens and its focal lengh the photos will be different.

And now we are going to the practice. For the photos I used the Tinkerbell Nendoroid, the figure is approximately 10cm tall, when sitting it measures a little less. The photo is indoors with artificial lighting and has been the same in all photographs. Although I should, I haven't used a tripod. I haven't used the flash either, I don't recommend using it because you have to know how to use it and the colours come out flat and with undesirable shadows behind. It's also not recommended to use it with figures and dolls because they could be damaged over time, for example, BJDs yellow faster.

You will see both versions of the photos, without editing and cropping, so you can see the difference between one camera and the other and the edited version, which would be the one that would normally be published.

Quería tener el control total de la cámara y vi que ya era el momento de pasar a una cámara réflex. La NIKON D3400 es una cámara pensada para fotógrafos principiantes y fue mi regado de Navidad en 2017. Actualmente utilizo esta cámara para las sesiones fotográficas, tanto de figuras y muñecas, como otro tipo de fotografía que no publico en este blog. Cuando la adquirí aún no sabía cómo usarla correctamente en modo manual, ahora apenas uso el modo automático y me parece una maravilla.

Venía con el objetivo del kit, un Nikkor AF-S DX 18-55mm. A principios de este año compré otro objetivo, un Tamron 16-300mm para poder hacer otro tipo de fotografía que con el 18-55mm no podía ya que dependiendo del objetivo y su longitud focal las fotos saldrán diferentes.

Y ahora vamos a la práctica. Para las fotos usé la Nendoroid de Campanilla, la figura mide aproximadamente 10cm, al estar sentada mide un poco menos. La foto es en interior con iluminación artificial y ha sido la misma en todas las fotografías. Aunque debería, no he usado trípode. Tampoco he hecho uso del flash, no recomiendo usarlo porque hay que saber utilizarlo y los colores salen planos y con sombras indeseables por detrás. Tampoco es recomendable usarlo con figuras y muñecas porque podrían dañarse a lo largo del tiempo, por poner un ejemplo, las BJD amarillean antes.

Veréis ambas versiones de las fotos, sin edición ni recorte, para que podáis apreciar la diferencia entre una cámara y otra y la versión editada, que sería la que publicaría normalmente.

Who has been surprised that this photo is has been taken with a smartphone? This camera barely blurs the background despite the aperture the photo has (the smaller the number, the more blur the background), but the quality is quite acceptable.

· Modo manual: Solo pude controlar el ISO, lo demás fue automático. No hice zoom.

¿Quién se ha sorprendido de que esta foto esté hecha con un teléfono móvil? Esta cámara apenas desenfoca el fondo a pesar de la apertura que tiene la foto (a cuanto más pequeño es el número, más desenfoque de fondo), pero la calidad es bastante aceptable. 

REDMI Note 7

· Manual mode: I could only control the ISO, the rest was automatic. I did not zoom it.

I took the photo in pro mode, adjusting the ISO and the exposure time. Opening is always automatic. I did not use 48MP mode..

I zoomed in x1.3. I do not recommend abusing the zoom because the photo can lose a lot of quality, it is better to get close to the object to be photographed. And a trick for mobiles that are very long. If what you see on the screen does not convince you of the angle, turn the phone so that the lens is below. I did not use this trick for this photo, although I have done it in others.

· Modo manual: La foto la hice en modo pro, ajustando el ISO y el tiempo de exposición. La apertura siempre es automática. No usé el modo a 48MP.

Hice zoom x1.3. No recomiendo abusar del zoom porque la foto puede perder mucha calidad, es mejor acercarse al objeto a fotografiar. Y un truco para los móviles que son muy largos. Si lo que ves en la pantalla no te convence el ángulo, gira el teléfono para que quede el objetivo por debajo. No usé este truco para esta foto, aunque sí lo he hecho en otras.

Olympus X-790

When I used this camera I got desperate because in indoors it's difficult to focus and the lighting has to be good, so I didn't know how to solve the lighting problem. You select white balance either, so if the lighting is warm, the photo may be orange. I have also noticed that even though the ISO is low, the photo has much more noise than the photos taken with the phones. Even so, I see that it doesn't work badly to photograph figures and it has focused immediately with the lighting that I have used.

Cuando usaba esta cámara me desesperaba porque en interiores le cuesta enfocar y la iluminación tiene que ser buena, así que no sabía cómo solucionar el problema de iluminación. Tampoco se puede configurar el balance de blancos, así que si la iluminación es cálida, puede que la foto salga anaranjada. También he notado que a pesar de que el ISO es bajo, la foto tiene mucho más ruido que las fotos hechas con los teléfonos. Aún así, para fotografiar figuras veo que no funciona mal y ha enfocado enseguida con la iluminación que he usado.

FUJIFILM FinePix S2980

I had to raise the ISO so that the photo didn't come out too dark. If I had used a tripod, I could have decreased the exposure time and the photo would have been brighter. I could also have raised the ISO, but it would have have more noise (grain or whatever you call it). Remember that the higher the ISO is, the more noise will appear in the photo.

I had to calculate the ideal distance for the camera to focus on the face of the figure.

· Modo manual: ISO + Apertura + Exposición. Usé zoom.

Tuve que subir el ISO para que la foto no saliese demasiado oscura. Si hubiese usado trípode, podría haber bajado el tiempo de exposición y la foto habría salido más luminosa. También podría haber subido el ISO, pero habría salido con más ruido (grano o como lo llaméis). Recordad que a cuanto más alto sea el ISO, más ruido saldrá en la foto.

Tuve que calcular la distancia ideal para que la cámara enfocase la cara de la figura.

Nikon D3400 + Nikkor 18-55mm

· Exposure: 1/30
· ISO: 400
· Focal length: 50mm
· Focal length in 35mm: 75mm
· Manual mode: ISO + Aperture + Exposure

If I had used a tripod, I could have decreased the exposure time and the photo would have been brighter. With this camera I can raise the ISO more without the fear that the photo will have a lot of noise.

Believe it or not, you also have to find the ideal focal length for focusing, whether automatic or manual, and therefore, you have to move closer or get away of the figure until you find the right length. I always take pictures of figures and dolls with a focal length between 45mm and 55mm because it is how they look more natural. For this reason, I have been thinking for a while about adquiring a 50mm 1.8 fixed focal length lens, ideal for portraits because it is also as bright as the Redmi Note 7.

For you to see more clearly the difference between one camera and another, I show you captures of the photos at 100%.

Subí el ISO para que la foto no saliese demasiado oscura. Si hubiese usado trípode, podría haber bajado el tiempo de exposición y la foto habría salido más luminosa. Con esta cámara puedo subir más el ISO sin miedo a que la foto salga con mucho ruido.

Os lo creáis o no, también hay que encontrar la distancia focal ideal para que enfoque, ya sea automático o manual, y por lo tanto, hay que ir acercándose o alejándose de la figura hasta dar con la longitud adecuada. Las fotos a figuras y muñecas siempre las hago con una distancia focal entre 45mm y 55mm porque es como salen más naturales. Por ese motivo llevo tiempo pensando en adquirir un objetivo de distancia focal fija de 50mm 1.8, ideal para retratos porque además, es tan luminoso como el Redmi Note 7.

Para que veáis con más claridad la diferencia entre una cámara y otra, os muestro capturas de las fotos al 100% sin editar. 

As you can see, the differences that are seen are in terms of noise, sharpness and other details that maybe you don't even appreciate. If someone is in a hurry to say that their photos are taken with a phone, you see that the camera of mine takes better quality photos than my compact camera and even than the bridge one, in the case of Redmi.

As I didn't use a tripod, the photo with the DSLR is a bit out of focus. I didn't manage to focus the eyes well and the lens I used doesn't have VR (vibration reduction system).

For toy photography I currently use the Nikon D3400 + Nikkor 18-55mm and Redmi Note 7 phone on rare occasions. With this I want to tell you that no matter what camera you have, you can take beautiful photos with any of them if you put a minimum effort into learning how to use them and adapt to the limitations that lower quality cameras may have, so keep enjoying to photograph your dolls and figures without giving more importance to your camera.

Como podéis observar, las diferencias que se aprecian son a nivel de ruido, nitidez y otros detalles que igual ni apreciáis. Si alguien tiene apuro de decir que sus fotos las hace con un teléfono, ya veis que la cámara de los míos sacan fotos de mejor calidad que mi cámara compacta e incluso que la bridge, en el caso del Redmi.

Como no usé trípode, la foto con la réflex ha salido un pelín desenfocada. No conseguí enfocar bien los ojos y el objetivo que usé no tiene VR (sistema de reducción de vibración).

Para la fotografía de juguetes actualmente uso la Nikon D3400 + Nikkor 18-55mm y el teléfono Redmi Note 7 en contadas ocasiones. Con esto os quiero decir que no importa la cámara que tengáis, podéis hacer fotos bonitas con cualquiera de ellas si ponéis un mínimo esfuerzo en aprender a utilizarlas y os adaptáis a las limitaciones que puedan tener las cámaras de menor calidad, así que seguid disfrutando mientras fotografiáis vuestras muñecas y figuras sin darle más importancia a vuestra cámara.
