How to bath a dog · Cómo bañar a un perro

This is another entry that I should have posted last year and out of sheer laziness I haven't posted it before. It has also taken me time to write it because there is a lot of text because it's not a simple photo shoot.

In May of last year I found a figure from my childhood, Rantamplan, Lucky Luke's dog. As it's of a size compatible with Nendoroids, I came up with a tutorial on how to bath a dog correctly. I took and posted the photos on Instagram last year.

I'm a dog groomer, so all the steps and tips are true of the profession, except that I have simplified it so that they can be done at home.

Esta es otra entrada que debería haber publicado el año pasado y por pura pereza no la he publicado antes. También me ha costado tiempo escribirla porque hay mucho texto porque no se trata de una simple sesión fotográfica.

En mayo del año pasado encontré una figura de mi infancia, a Rantamplan, el perro de Lucky Luke. Como es de tamaño compatible con los Nendoroid se me ocurrió hacer un tutorial de cómo bañar a un perro correctamente. Las fotos las hice y publiqué el año pasado en Instagram.

Soy peluquera canina, así que todos los pasos y consejos son reales de la profesión, salvo que lo he simplificado para que se pueda hacer en casa.

Welcome to Tooru's Dog grooming salon! He's going to teach us how to bath a dog properly.

Before bathing your dog is recommended brushing them and cleaning their ears and inner ears with an ear cleaner that is very easy to use and removes all wax and dirt that they may have. Instructions are perfectly explained on the packaging.

If your dog is long-haired, before cleaning their ears don't forget to remove all hairs from inside the ears to avoid infections. The hairs from the ears are removed by pulling them out with your fingers or mosquito forceps, but it's better to have them done by a professional if you don't have ear powder, which dry out the hair and thus our friend doesn't notice the pull so much.

In the tub you can empty their anal glands before wetting your dog, if you don't know how to do it, ask your vet to do it. Normally it's done once a month and there are dogs that don't need it because they empty them themselves, both males and females. Once done, be sure to wet your dog well because it might look wet but inside is dry! That specially happens with double coated dogs like German Shephers.

Now you can use a specific shampoo for your dog depending on their coat type. Don't forget to clean their paws, between the toes and pads, bottom and muzzle, especially in dogs with wrinkles. And make sure that the shampoo makes a lot of foam. If he/she is very dirty, repeat the operation after rinsing.

Tips: If your dog has long hair, avoid making circles when you soapy them and rub their body well, so his hair will not tangle.

Don't wet your dog's head until their body is completely wet. Once their head is wet, they will shake and will soak you. Anyway, be prepared to have a shower with him or her if they are big..

Be sure to remove all the shampoo when you'll rinse them. This way your friend won't have itching in their body.

Antes de bañar a tu perro, recomiendo cepillarle usando un peine o cepillo específico para su tipo de pelo, limpiar sus orejas y oídos con un limpiador de oídos que es muy sencillo de utilizar y elimina toda la cera y suciedad que pueda tener. En el envase vienen las instrucciones perfectamente explicadas.

Si tu perro es de pelo largo, antes de limpiarle los oídos no olvides quitarle todos los pelos de dentro de los oídos para evitar infecciones. Los pelos de los oídos se eliminan arrancándolos con los dedos o unas tijeras de mosquito, pero es mejor que los haga un profesional si no tienes polvos para oídos, que resecan el pelo y así nuestro amigo no nota tanto el tirón.

En la bañera puedes vaciar sus glándulas anales antes de mojar a tu perro, si no sabes cómo hacerlo, pídele a tu veterinario que lo haga. Normalmente se hace una vez al mes y hay perros a los que no les hace falta porque las vacían ellos solos, tanto machos como hembras. Una vez hecho esto, asegúrate de mojar bien a su perro, ya que puede parecer húmedo, ¡pero el interior está seco! Esto sucede especialmente con perros de doble capa de pelo, como los Pastores Alemanes.

Ahora puedes usar un champú específico para tu perro dependiendo de su tipo de pelo. No olvides limpiar sus patitas, entre los dedos y almohadillas, culete y hocico, especialmente en perros con arrugas. Y asegúrate de que el champú haga mucha espuma. Si está muy sucio, repite la operación después de aclarar.

Consejos: Si tu perro tiene el pelo largo, evita hacer círculos cuando le enjabones y le frotes bien en cuerpo, así no se enredará.

No mojes la cabeza de tu perro hasta que su cuerpo esté completamente mojado. Una vez que su cabeza esté mojada, se sacudirá y te empapará. De todas formas, prepárate para bañarte con él o ella si es grande.

Asegúrate de eliminar todo el champú cuando lo enjuagues. De esta manera, tu amigo no tendrá picores en el cuerpo.

After the bath and before to dry your dog, you can use a coat conditioner for dogs. There's a lot of beauty products for them!

You can use a towel after the bath to get moisture out, then it will be easier to dry your friend with the hairdryer. Don't forget to dry all the body, including inside the ears to prevent ear infections.

Tip: If your dog has long coat, dry them carefully with a towel avoiding doing circles so that their hair won't get tangled making knots, making it easier to comb. 

Important: Avoid to let your dog air dry, it's not very recommended because it might cause fongus and other skin problems. Not in summer either? No, neither in summer.

Después del baño y antes de secar a tu perro, puedes usar un acondicionador de pelo para perros. ¡Hay muchos productos de belleza para ellos!

Puedes usar una toalla después del baño para eliminar la humedad, luego será más fácil secar a tu amigo con el secador de pelo. No olvides secar todo el cuerpo, incluido el interior de las orejas para prevenir infecciones del oído.

Consejo: Si tu perro tiene un pelaje largo, sécale con cuidado con la toalla evitando hacer círculos para que su pelo no se enrede haciendo nudos, lo que facilita el peinado. 

Importante: Evita dejar que tu perro se seque al aire, no es recomendable porque puede causar hongos y otros problemas de la piel. ¿Tampoco en verano? No, tampoco en verano.

Your dog is ready to be dried with a hairdryer. You can use a hairdryer for humans, although there are specific dog dryers for private use that are similar to professional ones. It's easier to dry your friend if they are on a table, but you can do it on the floor if you don't have a proper table for it. Do it from back to front, beginning from hind legs and ending with the head. To so it, dry their hair in layers and make sure you can see their skin.

Don't forget to remove any remaining water and moisture inside the ears with absorbent paper. If you've decided to clean their ears for the end, now is the moment.

You can also cut their nails now, they will be softer. It's very important that they don't have long nails because your dog can be damaged and have malformations in the fingers by not being able to walk well, suffering pain. Keep in mind that dogs have dewclaws on their front legs, but some dogs also have dewclaws on one or both back legs, and if these nails are not trimmed they can dig into the flesh, causing wounds that can become infected. To cut their nails you must be very careful because you can make their nails bleed. If you don't know how to do it, take your friend to a professional.

Tips: Use a multi-purpose needle comb while drying your dog when their coat is a little bit wet, it will be easier to untangle knots. For short coat use a rubber glove for dogs to get a shiny coat. 

If your dog has long or medium coat, make sure their coat doesn't has knots after is completely dry and remember to brush their coat everyday (or at least do it three or four times a week). If you have decided to clean its ear at the end, this is the right moment.

Important note: Dogs usually don't accept the noise of the dryer and / or the air from the dryer going through their head, so if they get very nervous, stop to calm down and continue a few minutes later. If your friend still does not let their head dry even though the power of the dryer is at minimum, try to dry them as much as possible and use absorbent paper to remove the rest of the moisture.

Tu perro está listo para secarse con un secador de pelo. Puedes usar un secador de pelo para humanos, aunque hay secadores de perros específicos para uso privado que son similares a los profesionales. Es más fácil secar a tu amigo si está en una mesa, pero puedes hacerlo en el suelo si no tienes una mesa adecuada para ello. Hazlo de atrás hacia adelante, comenzando desde las patas traseras y terminando con la cabeza. Para ello, seca su pelo en capas y asegúrate de que puedes ver su piel.

No olvides eliminar el agua y la humedad restantes dentro de las orejas con papel absorbente. Si has decidido limpiar sus oídos para el final, ahora es el momento.

También puedes cortar sus uñas ahora, que estarán más blanditas. Es muy importante que no tengan las uñas largas porque se pueden hacer daño y llegar a tener malformaciones en los dedos al no poder caminar bien, sufriendo dolor. Ten en cuenta que los perros tienen espolones en sus patas delanteras, pero algunos perros también las tienen en una o ambas patas traseras y si no se cortan esas uñas se les pueden clavar en la carne, produciendo heridas que se pueden infectar. Para cortar las uñas debes tener mucho cuidado porque puedes hacer que sus uñas sangren. Si no sabes cómo hacerlo, lleva a tu amigo a un profesional. 

Consejos: Utiliza un peine de carda y en dirección del pelo mientras secas a tu perro cuando su pelaje esté un poco húmedo, será más fácil desenredar los nudos y su pelo lucirá liso, suelto y con volumen. Para el pelaje corto, usa un guante de goma para perros para conseguir un pelo brillante.

Si su perro tiene pelo largo o mediano, asegúrate de que su pelo no tenga nudos después del secado y recuerda peinarlo todos los días (o al menos hacerlo tres o cuatro veces por semana).  

Nota importante: Normalmente los perros no aceptan el ruido del secador y/o que el aire del secador les pase por la cabeza, así que si se pone muy nervioso, para para que se tranquilice y continúa unos minutos más tarde. Si aún así tu amigo no se deja secar la cabeza aunque la potencia del secador esté al mínimo, intenta secarle lo máximo posible y utiliza papel absorbente para eliminar el resto de humedad.

Actually, the next step in dogs with long or semi-long hair would be to trim their hair and here I could write several tutorials, which I'm not going to do.

Edit: Xanadu suggested adding how often do dogs need to bathe. It depends on the type of their coat since long-haired dogs can bathe once a month and short-haired dogs can last longer. I advise against bathing them every week unless they have a skin disease and need a weekly bath with a special shampoo prescribed by your vet. But what happens if your dog gets dirty before the recommended time? Don't worry and bathe them as long a specific shampoo is used. Never use products for humans or barbarities such as dishwashing liquid.

And as a professional I'm going to ask you for a favor that will benefit your furry friends. Please, never clip dogs that are double coat, you will be doing them much more harm than good and also they can damage their hair irreversibly, the best thing for them is to remove all dead hair and without pain with a special comb that you can buy in any pet store and you can do it yourself at home perfectly. You will notice that the density of dead hair drops considerably.

Neither ask for exaggeratedly short haircuts for long-haired dogs. Think that their hair protects them from both cold and heat, it does them no good thinking that in summer they will be cooler with short hair because even if you don't believe it, that layer of hair helps them stay cooler and protects them. from sunburn and bites from mosquitoes or other insects. Their skin is very sensitive and if they are too shaved, they will need sunscreen to avoid burns. They will also be more likely to suffer from heat stroke, which can be fatal. I only ask for responsibility. Dogs don't sweat like we do because they lack sweat glands, they stay cool by keeping their mouths open, and they expel heat through their pads.

Edito: Xanadu sugirió añadir cada cuánto tiempo se tienen que bañar los perros. Va a depender del tipo de pelo ya que los perros de pelo largo se pueden bañar una vez al mes y los de pelo corto pueden aguantar más tiempo. Desaconsejo bañarles todas las semanas a no ser que tenga alguna enfermedad en la piel y necesite un baño semanal con un champú especial que haya recetado el veterinario. ¿Pero qué pasa si tu perro se ensucia antes del tiempo aconsejado? No te preocupes y báñalo siempre que se utilice un champú específico. Jamás uses productos para humanos o barbaridades como líquido lavavajillas.

Y como profesional os voy a pedir un favor que beneficiará a vuestros amigos peludos. Por favor, jamás rapéis a perros que tengan doble capa de pelo, les estaréis haciendo mucho más daño que beneficio y además se les puede estropear el pelo de forma irreversible, lo mejor para ellos eliminar todo el pelo muerto y sin dolor con un peine especial que podéis comprar en cualquier tienda de animales y que podéis hacerlo vosotros mismos en casa perfectamente. Notaréis que la densidad de pelo muerto baja considerablemente.

Tampoco pidáis cortes de pelo exageradamente cortos para perritos de pelo largo. Pensad que el pelo les protege tanto del frío como del calor, no se les hace ningún bien pensando que en verano estarán más fresquitos con el pelo corto porque aunque no os lo creáis, esa capa de pelo les ayuda a mantenerse más frescos y les protege de las quemaduras del sol y las picaduras de los mosquitos u otros insectos. Su piel es muy sensible y si están muy rapados, van a necesitar que se les ponga crema solar para evitar quemaduras. También estarán más propensos a sufrir de golpes de calor, que pueden llegar a ser mortales. Solo pido responsabilidad. Los perros no sudan como nosotros porque carecen de glándulas sudoríparas, se mantienen frescos manteniendo la boca abierta y expulsan el calor por sus almohadillas.
