Toy photography is not easy · La fotografía de juguetes no es fácil

Many times I have read complaints from toy photographers who have been told that this type of photography is easy or that we who take photos indoors are lazy. If you don't take photographs of your dolls and figures, I don't know if you have ever wondered how long it takes to prepare, take one or more photographs if it is a photo shoot and then edit them. Well, that's what I'm going to talk about today.

The following photograph was taken in July 2019. At first glance it's quite simple and doesn't seem to have much of a complication.

Muchas veces he leído quejas de fotógrafos de juguetes a los que les han dicho que este tipo de fotografía es fácil o que los que hacemos fotos en interiores somos unos vagos. Si no hacéis fotografías a vuestras muñecas y figuras, no sé si alguna vez os habéis preguntado cuánto tiempo se tarda en preparar, tomar una o varias fotografías si es una sesión y después editarlas. Pues de eso voy a hablar hoy.

La siguiente fotografía la hice en julio de 2019. A simple vista es bastante sencilla y no parece tener mucha complicación.

The scene is inspired by the character "El tío la vara" (The guy of da Rod), from the Spanish TV show "La hora de José Mota". I had the idea several months before taking the photograph because I had to wait for one of these figures to arrive so that all the characters were together. I don't draw in a notebook the idea that I want to photograph, normally I have a mental idea and sometimes I write it down in a note, type "El tío la Vara" as it's in this case, and I will work from there and improvise when I prepare the photograph. There are also occasions when I start photographing and I get completely improvised photographs at the moment.

When I finally found the time to prepare everything, I started to think about what background to use. At first I thought about using scrapbook sheets.

La escena está inspirada en el personaje "El tío la vara", del programa "La hora de José Mota". La idea la tuve varios meses antes de hacer la fotografía porque tenía que esperar a que me llegase una de estas figuras para que estuviesen todos los personajes juntos. No soy de dibujar en una libreta la idea que quiero fotografiar, normalmente tengo una idea mental y a veces la apunto en una nota, tipo "El tío la Vara" como es en este caso, y voy trabajando a partir de ahí e improvisando cuando preparo la fotografía. También hay ocasiones que me pongo a fotografiar y me salen fotografías completamente improvisadas en el momento.

Cuando por fin pude encontrar el momento para prepararlo todo, me puse a pensar qué fondo utilizar. En un principio pensé en utilizar unas hojas de scrapbook.

I have several sets with different decorated sheets and finally I chose the ones that I was going to use for the background.

Tengo varios sets con distintas hojas decoradas y finalmente escogí las que iba a utilizar para el fondo.

I photograph Nendoroids and articulated figures on my desk and this is how I prepare the backgrounds and the floor. On many occasions I use the desk as a floor.

Las fotografías a Nendoroids y figuras articuladas las hago en mi escritorio y así es como preparo los fondos y el suelo. En muchas ocasiones uso el escritorio como suelo. 

Figures also need to be prepared. Which faceplates they are going to wear, their arms, their hands ... So when they are ready, they must be made to pose.

También hay que preparar a las figuras. Qué caritas van a llevar, los bracitos, las manos... Así que cuando están preparados hay que hacerles posar.

I changed the background several times because I didn't like it and if you wonder if this is habitual, although it's not always the case, it happens many times because one thing is your mental idea and another when you put it into practice..

Cambié varias veces el fondo porque no me gustaba y si os preguntáis si esto es habitual, aunque no siempre es así, ocurre muchas veces porque una cosa es tu idea mental y otra cuando la pones en práctica.  

And we must not forget that figures have a life of their own! You may come across the situation that they refuse to collaborate and fall off while you are taking the photo. There are times when they do the domino effect and they fall one figure after the other and it's tremendously frustrating.

¡Y no hay que olvidarse de que las figuras tienen vida propia! Te puedes encontrar con la situación de que se niegan a colaborar y se caen mientras estás haciendo la foto. Hay veces que hacen el efecto dominó y caen una figura detrás de la otra y es tremendamente desesperante.

To make Nendoroids pose without falling, you must use the arm of their base. I don't usually use the square base in my photographs because they are more difficult to erase in Photoshop, so since with the arm alone they couldn't hold, I used blu-tack and a coin to maintain the pose. In simpler poses I use a piece of wire like the ones you can see on the table in a photo above. I put them behind the figure as a "third leg", it's easier to erase in Photoshop than the base arm.

Para que los Nendoroids posen sin caerse hay que utilizar el brazo de su base. La base cuadrada no suelo usarla en mis fotografías porque son más difíciles de borrar en Photoshop, así que como con el brazo solo no se aguantaban, usé blu-tack y una moneda para que mantuviesen la pose. En poses más sencillas uso un trozo de alambre como los que podéis ver encima de la mesa en unas fotos más arriba. Los pongo por detrás de la figura a modo de "tercera pierna", es más sencillo de borrar en Photoshop que el brazo de la base.

Finally I decided on a completely white background so that the attention doesn't go to the background and the figures will have the leading role completely. The paper on the floor is satin and the figures will be reflected on the floor. 

Finalmente decidí un fondo completamente blanco para que la atención no se fuese al fondo de atrás y las figuras tuviesen completamente el protagonismo. El papel del suelo es satinado y saldrán las figuras reflejadas en el suelo.

And it was time to take the final photo. Tôru was tired and preferred to constantly lie on the ground.

As you can see, my study is very simple, I use a flexo that gives the light from above and mirrors and cardboard as light reflectors.

When taking the photos, you must take into account the composition and that the lighting transmit what you want to transmit. I take several almost equal photos and then keep the best one. Thanks to digital photography I'm not afraid of blurry or poorly composed photos because I will not have wasted photographic reel uselessly.

The camera is a Nikon D3400 with a Nikkor 18-55mm lens from the kit. I usually take photos at 40-55mm and always in manual mode. But you can use the camera of your phone or a compact or bridge camera perfectly. You just have to know how to use it to get the most out of it. In another post I will update this topic.

Y llegó el momento de hacer la foto final. Tôru estaba cansado y prefería estar constantemente tirado en el suelo.

Como veis, mi estudio es muy simple, utilizo un flexo que da la luz por arriba y espejos y cartulinas como reflectores de luz.

Al tomar las fotos hay que tener en cuenta la composición y que la iluminación transmita lo que quieres transmitir. Yo hago varias fotos casi iguales para luego quedarme con la mejor. Gracias a la fotografía digital no tengo miedo de que me salgan fotos borrosas o con mala composición porque no habré malgastado carrete fotográfico inútilmente.

La cámara es una Nikon D3400 con objetivo Nikkor 18-55mm del kit. Las fotos las suelo hacer a 40-55mm y siempre en modo manual. Pero vosotros podéis utilizar la cámara del móvil o una cámara compacta o bridge perfectamente. Tan solo tenéis que saber cómo utilizarla para sacarle el máximo provecho posible. En otra entrada actualizaré este tema.

Finally, it's time to do magic with Photoshop. I don't know if you can appreciate in the layers that I took another photograph of the background without the figures to be able to superimpose both photographs by deleting the arms from the base. My knowledge is quite basic and for more complicated things I have to watch tutorials or tinker with the program until I get what I want. When I end the photo, the result is that of the photograph that you have seen at the beginning of this entry.

ow much time did I have to invest? Well, more than an hour just to prepare the photo and take it, for sure. There are times that it can be more or less time, and only for a single photograph. If it is a shoot in which I have to change several parts of the figure, the time can increase another hour perfectly.

The same thing happens with editing. There are photos that hardly need to be edited, if it's only correcting colours and a little more I can do it in five minutes. In photos with more digital editing I may need an hour or two.

I hope you have found this entry interesting and from this moment on you can value a little better the work that there is behind all the photographs of figures and dolls that you see. It's not about shooting the photo and and done, there is enough work behind them that deserves to be valued.

Por último, toca hacer magia con Photoshop. No sé si podéis llegar a apreciar en las capas que tomé otra fotografía del fondo sin las figuras para poder superponer ambas fotografías al borrar los brazos de la base. Mis conocimientos son bastante básicos y para cosas más complicadas tengo que mirar tutoriales o ir trasteando con el programa hasta conseguir lo que quiero. Cuando doy la foto por terminada, el resultado es el de la fotografía que habéis podido ver al inicio de esta entrada.

¿Cuánto tiempo tuve que invertir? Pues más de una hora solo para preparar la foto y hacerla, seguro. Hay veces que puede ser o más o menos tiempo y solo para una sola fotografía. Si es una sesión en la que tengo que cambiar varias partes de la figura, el tiempo puede incrementar otra hora más perfectamente.

Con la edición ocurre igual. Hay fotos que apenas necesitan retoque, si solo es corregir colores y poquito más puedo hacerlo en cinco minutos. En fotos con más edición digital puedo necesitar una o dos horas más.

Espero que os haya parecido interesante esta entrada y que a partir de este momento podáis valorar un poquito mejor el trabajo que hay de todas las fotografías de figuras y muñecas que veáis. No se trata de disparar la foto y ya, hay bastante trabajo detrás de ellas que merece ser valorado.
